Three cheers for the internet. It means you can go to the ball and not find your invited guests queued down the front path when you return.

The kirk session, as not all of you will know, is the group of folk in a Scottish congregation who, together with the Minister, run that congregation. I'm not on it.

Husband is and indeed is a former Session Clerk. Important person in any Church. So when the current SC, whose house has small rooms, asks for a vounteer to host a supper out of the halls, he says, 'could you bear it?'

Is there any other answer, than 'yes, dear'? There must be and I need to learn it or the WIP will never get to the magical moment of readiness. It took all day yesterday and some of Monday, Sunday and Saturday to shift furniture, locate cutlery etc. All ready by 4.30 but too strung out to turn on the computer. Schedule now 1,500 words down.

Writers used to slouching around in comfy flats and auld claes should not spend eight hours in a frock and high heels. Because the husband feels we're getting behind with our quickstep, we sent a round robin advising the guests not to arrive before 7.30pm and (fox)trotted off to the class (see Twinkle Toes below). My legs are just recovering but it did take nearly an hour to drop off last night. Stragglers were keeping us awake well past elder son's bedtime. Shouldn't have left them to pour their own drinks or directed them to the brie.

However, devotees will be pleased to learn that we're not the worst/slowest quickstep in the land and we can now do both natural and reverse turns in our waltz wthout watching the pair next to us at all.

And the Session members did bring a very lovely bouquet in autumn colours.

A driving instructor (and I had several) once told me I was the most right dominant pupil he'd ever taught. He was talking about the way my brain works and not my politics. It had been pointed out to me earlier when I was playing badminton at school. The Maths teacher, filling in for PE staff said quietly, 'Aha, Anne's right eye is stronger than her left.' If, as I believe is the case, the right side of the body is controlled by the left of the brain, then presumably, I'm actually left dominant.

Who knows?

What is true is that learning to waltz while doing what the teacher does and then having to do it with the other foot when paired with my partner is proving every bit as challenging as bike riding. Which, for the record, I can't. Ride a bike. The brain, both sides, seizes and I go over the handle-bars when I try to brake.

We have been able to work up the basic waltz and very basic cha-cha to the point where we ventured into a dancing club last night for their free trial. This was where we discovered my partner also has issues with right/left feet. I see much work for my chiropodist on the horizon. May even vote for Ann Widdecombe as I too have a foot of height difference between me and my dancing partner.

Writing connection? Gosh, ever been to a dancing club? Characters, characters, characters.
