He was only the second man in American history to take over while both his parents were living; he took over from the then oldest American Chief Executive.</span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 27pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span>That inaugural speech may not have been Kennedy&rsquo;s best; some say that was his American University commencement address in June 1963 when he called for the re-examination of the cold war, the country&rsquo;s relationship with Russia and the meaning of peace. This was after he had unilaterally declared a suspension of American nuclear testing in the atmosphere.</span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 27pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span>Most important historically was his televised address on October 22 1962 revealing the presence of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, a mere 90 miles from US shores and in which he set out his response for the withdrawal of the missiles.</span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 27pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span>In his inaugural address where he set out his vision he included some prophetic words: &ldquo;All this will not be finished in the first 100 days. Nor will it be finished in the first 1000 days&hellip;&rdquo;</span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 27pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span>On November 22 1963, barely past that 1000 days Kennedy was killed by Lee Harvey Oswald&rsquo;s bullets as his motorcade drove through Dallas. The youngest man to be elected he was the youngest to die, aged 46.</span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center; line-height: 150%;" align="center"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span>*****</span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 27pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span>Kennedy&rsquo;s inauguration did not go as planned. The President-elect was late &ndash; so many people wanted to shake his hand. Then as Cardinal Cushing gave the invocation a short-circuit from a space heater sent wisps of smoke above his lectern before men scurried to put it out.</span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 27pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span>Kennedy had invited Robert Frost to write a poem for the inauguration. Although it was a bitterly cold day, the blinding sun meant that the 86-year-old Frost was unable to read the typed copy of the poem he had written. Instead Frost ended up reciting his poem, &lsquo;A Gift Outright&rsquo;, from memory, beginning with the line:</span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 27pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span>&lsquo;The land was ours before we were the land&rsquo;s.&rsquo;</span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 27pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span>Kennedy quoted in return from the last stanza of Frost&rsquo;s &lsquo;Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening:&rsquo;</span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 27pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span>&nbsp;</span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 47.5pt; text-align: justify; text-indent: 27pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span>&lsquo;&hellip;. The archivist noticed some pencilled writing on the poem. It proved to be by Jacqueline Kennedy to her husband and read, &ldquo;For Jack, First thing I had framed to put in your office &ndash; first thing to be hung there.&rdquo;</span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 27pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span>The poem had been in someone&rsquo;s private collection for years. </span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 27pt; line-height: 150%;">&nbsp;</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-indent: 27pt; line-height: 150%;"><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal</w:View> <w:Zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:PunctuationKerning /> <w:ValidateAgainstSchemas /> <w:SaveIfXMLInvalid>false</w:SaveIfXMLInvalid> <w:IgnoreMixedContent>false</w:IgnoreMixedContent> <w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText>false</w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText> <w:Compatibility> <w:BreakWrappedTables /> <w:SnapToGridInCell /> <w:WrapTextWithPunct /> <w:UseAsianBreakRules /> <w:DontGrowAutofit /> </w:Compatibility> <w:BrowserLevel>MicrosoftInternetExplorer4</w:BrowserLevel> </w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:LatentStyles DefLockedState="false" LatentStyleCount="156"> </w:LatentStyles> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} </style> <![endif]--></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 27pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span>[Lancer was JFK&rsquo;s Secret Service Code Name]</span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 27pt; line-height: 150%;">&nbsp;</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 27pt; line-height: 150%;"><em>This was written and posted on 20th January, the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy's inauguration<br /></em></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 27pt; line-height: 150%; padding-left: 30px;">&nbsp;</p>
