Word of Mouth
Who is the present Children's Laureate? Think Gruffalo.
Yesterday, on Radio 2, the presenter Graham Norton was interviewing Jacqueline Wilson. She was the Children’s Laureate between the years 2005-7 and received a bursary of £15,000.
To date, 30,000,000 of Jacqueline’s books have been sold in the UK alone and have been translated into 30 languages.
Jacqueline admitted that the Jackie magazine for teenage girls (remember the Cathy and Claire problem page? Graham did) was named after her, as she was the youngest journalist in the office at the time, before she became a notable author.
Whilst on the subject of words, Stephen Fry’s Planet Word is showing on BBC2 tonight at 9 pm; a five-part series exploring language in all its amazing complexity, variety and ingenuity.
Stephen claims there are 6 to 7,000 languages spoken worldwide and many of them are rapidly becoming extinct.
One never knows, he might even discuss the subject of texting and poetry.
- Now I'm wishing I'd seen the Fry programme too.
- I feel like I've already watched Fry's programme. I follow his offical account on Twitter and he was all over the world making this series.
- Hoping to watch the Stephen Fry programme tonight, too, Marilyn. Language is a fascinating subject.

Everyone has a universal story to tell, it's the uniqueness of the telling that's the winner! All I need to do is think of something hooky, quirky, funny, original, stupendously creative, clever and wisdomic - I think I'll just stick to writing.
