Ebooks, Ebooks, Ebooks! Is there profit in them?
In one form or another there has been a lot of talk about ebooks around here and other places on the web. Are they any good? Is it real publishing? How do you write them? Should you write them? and more importantly, can you make any money from them?
Well I'm a big believer in ebooks! You may have noticed I use them a lot, not only as a promotional tool to attract new members to Writelink, but actually sell some of them as do millions of others.
It's been in the back of my mind to write an ... er ... ebook on how to do this, but Nick Daws has beaten me to it! I don't mind as I've just reviewed his course and found it an excellent publication for anyone new to epublishing.
If this is something you've been considering, but don't know where to start, you'll find the review here:
- Thanks David for your kind comments. Re digital publishing of novels. I think you are spot on, it is the marketing. Marketing is the key to all web publicity, no matter what field you are in so it is vital we learn how to do it. The reason I won't push it in these kind of articles is because they are written for people new to this type of publishing and I don't want to give the impression that they will become mega rich once they have epublished a novel.
I think the situation is constantly changing and evolving so it is good to get updates from people who are involved in it so thanks for your input. The Spring Fever poetry anthology is due out around Christmas and will be published both in print format and as an ebook. It will be pushed through the Writelink site and newsletter so perhaps a bit of an unfair advantage, but it will be interesting to see which method results in the most sales. Thinking about it though, creating a site for a likely readership and a newsletter to keep in touch with them is a major element of making sales so perhaps not an unfair advantage at all! I'll share all results with members in an article! By the way, it would be good to have an article on your experiences epublishing novels. You could post it to Resources and include a link to Voices when it comes out which would give you a good backlink. Just a thought! - HI SUe
I just read the piece on Scribd. Bang on the mark as ever ... except.
As a general rule novels don't sell well as e-books, but the e-book of Melmerby has always outsold the paperback, and on Smashwords (who do nothing but e-books) they're beefing up the tale of one author, Brian S Prat, who picked up $4,000 in a single month from e-books sales with the site.
The balance appears to be shifting towards e-books in both fiction and non-fiction, and with Voices due out soon in both e and print formats, as well as audio and iPhone, it'll be intereting to see where the sales come from.
As always, I believe it's down to marketing.
