Among today's featured stories on the news site that happens to be my homepage was this one: See Lady Gaga pash herself. Very edifying! We've also got Girls, 4, targeted in sexy underwear spread and Granny hacked with sword over video game ban. Pretty much says it all, really, doesn't it? Not just about the media, but about what we've come to accept.

We're all asking ourselves what went wrong, and here's my take on it.

Discipline has been undermined by self-righteous do-gooders who live in la-la land

The media and the same self-righteous do-gooders preach a sense of entitlement

The concept of personal responsibility is considered blasphemy (the do-gooders again?)

The Haves have so much they're bored

The Have-nots have so little they've lost hope as well, and they're also bored

Those at the top are like Nero - fiddling as Rome burned

The majority - those of us in the middle - are too busy staying afloat to get involved

Our current Prime Minister has scuppered any chance of re-election by introducing a carbon tax. The immediate response has been shock and horror, with no thought of the good it might do the environment. The Leader of the Opposition has cashed in by scare-mongering, doom saying and denying the existence of global warming. Personally, I hope the PM goes down in history as a legend - a politician who had the courage to act for the greater good despite the personal consequences. I don't see it happening very often in a world that has more to do with rapacious individuals than with a genuine society.

We all have to face the consequences of our actions. That's a good lesson to learn. But do they learn it, or will the same sort of thing happen again when they are released? A friend of mine said what we need is a far island to dump people on, along with the means to survive, and then we could forget about them. A few centuries ago, we sent our so-called criminals to Oz, and now they've evolved into people like you, Helen. I don't want to start another debate about what happens to indigenous people so I guess if our island was previously uninhabited, it could be the answer.

What a sign of the times. Let them go free, that's wrong. Punish them, that's wrong. What is anyone supposed to do? If you do the right thing you will be criticised for it, do the wrong thing and you will probably be praised. What a mixed up world we are living in.

Can't fault you, Helen, nor you , Sue, but the tale that got my goat was another rioter who got a suspended sentence despite being caught with a car-full of goodies from the looting.

Politicians are the same the world over, Helen. Their attitude is, I'm all right, Jack. It's rare that you meet one who's prepared to put his exchequer where his mouth is. As for the rest, don't vote for them. It only encourages them.

Anarchy is the only way forward but I can't make my mind up whether to take over the brown ale brewery or the pork pie factory first.

and from our end ... howls of outrage from more do-gooders protesting about 4 year jail sentences on two characters who used Facebook to incite riots! People got injured, lost their lives and their livelihoods and were terrified out of their minds, but we mustn't punish youthful high spirits or shock horror! Take these revolting people out of society to reflect upon the consequences of their actions!
