Chickens and Eggs
I'm doing some work for a copywriter and she asked to write some website content. She always gives me a good brief, although limited by what she can get from the client and the designer. This one is for an interior designer and my first question was whether we had any images for it. Would you believe that the web designer will not make a start without content. Apparently many web design companies now work to this rule because they have been kept waiting for things from their clients for months in the past before they have been able to complete and invoice their work. Well, it doesn't make it easy for a writer to produce content without being able to see what they are writing about. Talk about the chicken and egg syndrome!
Anyway after two false starts, I cracked it in a day and a half, and produced the three pages required to the copywriter's satisfaction. Of course, I won't get paid for working a day and a half. I'd never get any more sub contracted work if I billed that much for less than a thousand words that include keywords. I just do it so I don't have the hassle of hunting my own clients for more income to supplement my pension. But sometimes I wonder if I really am a mug.
- My son is a web designer and they have the same problem. Clients don't really understand that they have to provide the copy or at least something for a copy writer to start with. My son's firm insist on an up front payment which makes the client commit.
When I do this kind of work I always make a minimum charge of ВЈ20 even if it is only supplying a paragraph. As for longer pieces, I give a fixed price working on ВЈ20 per hour. If I think it will take a day, then that is what I tell them and that's what I charge. It will include two revisions. This is quite a low rate really when you think tax and NI has to come out of it.
As for those $1 articles, anyone who is running serious business would be committing suicide using them. They are generated from articles in the public domain and "spun" using specialist software. Most of them are barely readable! - Talking of which, Jean, I came across a content provider the other week whose rates, in my opinion, were a disgrace. Average price for an article or voicerover $1-$2. How does that compare?
- I do the same sort of thing, Jean. My kids tell me I don't charge enough, but I agree with you. And it keeps me entertained!
- Sounds insane. How on earth did you manage? Hats off to you!
- Sounds tricky writing without images for something where the image will be making a major impression. It must be quite an art to write tight copy with keywords too.
