THE DIGFIELD CONJUROR - Part 1 - The Black Kitten

National Story Telling week doesn't start until the 31st January, but I'm starting early to get the ball rolling!

[More:]

I wrote this story quite a few years ago and have never done anything with it as it is far too long for most short story competitions.

It’s also in dialect and I’ve had the devil of a job trying to mimic a rustic voice!

I shouldn’t have to explain, but just in case you can’t follow my jabber, the story is set just before the first world war in deepest rustic land.

The conjuror is a male version of the local wise woman or hedge witch. They were often called in to treat cattle illnesses and were generally considered to be forces for good. My conjuror, though has a more sinister role!

The story is told through the eyes of Aggie, an old woman remembering her childhood

I'll post the second part tomorrow!

I do bee loikin' this ere' un lokel
yokel tale.
I do be learnin' summat as well, hedge
witch.
Yes, but I'd have preferred it if the Conjuror or local doctor was a woman.
Why have you made the rustic healer
a man?
I thought the accent is spot on,
because I know someone in these rural parts who still speaks like that.
Also interesting is the 'immunological
idea' sort of vaccinating the child
with a cat scratch.
Good story, just right for an oral rendition.
You could have a cat meowing in it!
