WELCOME TO FLORIN

It’s been a very hectic few days to say the least, but the good news is we’ve five new arrivals on the farm including this cute little lassie …

[More:]

Florin is a British White heifer calf who we hope will form part of our new cattle herd. We’ve kept cattle for years, but these have always been continental cross breeds. Most of these have grown old and now gone to the great meadow in the sky so we thought we’d replace them with British Whites.

This is a very old breed noted for its distinctive markings. The nose, eyes, ears and feet are black. It is derived from an even older breed known as White Park cattle. If you get the chance, you can see some of these in a very ancient setting at Chillingham in Northumbria. When we went, we had to be taken by landrover as they were miles from anywhere.

Our little Florin and her mum, Silver are a bit more pampered than that, but are still hardy types. This pair join, Isabelle another British White and her son who remains nameless!

Silver & Florin

To complete our little herd, we purchased Icarus at the Melton Mowbray Native Breeds show and sale which took place last Friday and Saturday. Although a big, musclely chap, so far he has proved to be a big softy. Hope he stays that way! :D

Aw bless, they look like real fighters Sue! Congratulations on the newcomers to the family and I hope they prosper. As to the nameless - talk about curiosity killed the cat!

The pictures are lovely. I do have to confess as much as I admire cows for their beautiful faces I am reluctant to walk through a field with them in, as they make me feel fearful. If there is a fence between us, then I have no problem. No reason for such a fear it is just naturally there - strange.

Super photos, Sue. Don't cattle always seem so peaceful. Changing from cross-breeds to one specific breed must take some research. I wonder what made you choose British Whites?

Ah, so cute, well the top two pictures, anyway. I don't think I'd describe the bull as cute!

Nice animals Sue; reminds me of the Native Americans' sacred white buffalo.

I've always liked British Whites, Patruska, ever since I saw a couple auctioned off at a small market not too far away from us. It's taken me 15 years to get them though!

Caz, it pays to be careful around any animal, but it's unusual for cows to attack anyone unless you try to interfer with their calves of course. Bulls should always be treated with respect.

Funny, Marc, Icarus struck me as looking a bit like a buffalo!

Congrats on these new aquisitions, Sue. Mother and daughter are real cuties. I've learnt something as I've never met this breed before. A friend from Oz told me stories about her Charolais herd and having to be nimble when the bull hurtled towards the barrow of feed she was pushing.

As you have named the heifer Florin perhaps the nameless one should be Crown. It would have to be Crown because Half-a-Crown doesn't have the same ring about it.

This breed is new to me Sue, but what attractive beasts. I wrote a piece about a farmer here who's built up a 'heritage herd' of old dairy cattle breeds that aren't considered fashionable anymore. There were names I'd never heard of that went back to the First Fleet almost. Really interesting to learn of their history though.
