SWIFTS
The swallows are back! One flew low over my head and reminded me of this poem I wrote about swifts!
Swifts are wheeling in the early morning light,
Free spirits gliding on the summer airs.
Don’t you wish, Oh don’t you wish,
you had wings to fly,
slip the mundane chains of earth,
turn cartwheels in the sky.
Say the world is long unkind, say that love is blind.
Farewell sorrow, farewell pain,
they will never come again.
I heard it said that life is a poor reflection,
seen through fire shadows on the wall.
Don’t you know, Oh don’t you know,
there are no watchers in the night.
No chains to bind nor shrouds to blind.
Paint your dreams in colours bright.
Say the world is long unkind, say that love is blind,
Life times come and life times go,
the wheel turns round is all you need to know.
Winter nights are long and cold,
time hangs heavy for the broken hearted.
Don’t you worry, Oh don’t you worry,
swifts are flying in the blue.
Kiss your fingers to small time thinkers,
false deceivers, non-believers,
they cannot follow you.
Say the world is long unkind, say that love is blind,
Freedom comes when love’s denied,
Swifts are circling, time to fly.
