Not a second too late!

My poetry seems to have sprung to life just in time for Easter with some good news today.

[More:]

I've just found out a 15-line version of my poem Morning Collage has won second prize in this year's annual writelink Spring Fever poetry competition. My poem Last Spring was also highly commended. And if this wasn't enough (nothing is ever enough!), I also have another guest post at Marc's folding mirror blog.

My prize-winning poem and acompanying poem are below. Happy Easter everyone!

Morning Collage

Spring sunshine has unglued the clouds.
They’ve bobbed to rest
in the nest of upside-down trees.

Two swans search reed feathers
for soft strips to cushion their eggs.
They filch from canal clouds:

silver linings spill across the water,
glitter in sunlight rippling my neck
like your breath last night.

I want to skim the surface,
stroke the muscles of its banks
until my skin’s impregnated with magic.

Instead I carry home frost jewels,
wake you
with the taste of new morning.

Thank you all.
Funny you should mention chocolate, David. I'm not a milk tray girl - but I do have several Easter eggs stashed away just waiting for an excuse to eat them!

Lovely poem, Sarah. And lovely photo too of the canal clouds.

My ducks are doing this right now.

Thanks Daffni,
The swans are nesting now. It's the third year running and I was a bit worried canal restoration work might disturb them. That said I think they may only have two eggs this year. Last year they had five and only two survived so I just hope these two eggs are good ones. Fingers crossed.

Loved your poem. Worthy winner. Beautiful construction and description, and moving too. Hope it's not autobiographical.
