Not a Page 3 girl!

Apparently the story about Legend Press's new edition of Remarkable Everyday containing my short story Monday, has also made one of our free local papers. And they've not hidden it either.

[More:]

seen the paper yet but apparently the story (complete with picture) is front page. It's also now on the paper's website here.

I don't know who's likely to have been more shocked. All the poor people who've had my ugly mug stare up at them from the doormat, or me when I found out about it on the school playground yesterday morning?!?

People were still commenting about it today. I was actually secretly quite glad when it rained on my parade, so to speak, for picking up time! A month's rain in one day, the local paper was warning and I have to say some of the roads had turned into fords where there aren't meant to be fords! But it does seem to have stopped now, so fingers crossed not as damaging as last year's flood.

Anyway, outdoor activity has been rather a risk for the past week so I have been enjoying the chance to immerse myself in some reading without feeling like I ought to be doing something more useful!

I've just finished the latest copy of Orbis. There are some excellent poems in it, as usual, and I was chuffed to find I'd gained honourable mention for my poem in the previous edition's readers' award. (Okay, so it's not first, second or third but it really is just nice to read feedback from people I don't know at all.)

I've also had a recent Amazon poetry binge and now have anthologies by Kathryn Simmonds, Allison McVety and Michael Symmons Roberts sitting on the sofa. I've just dipped into some of Symmons Roberts' The Half Healed. Delicious!

On the Amazon binge then Sarah - what's worth buying? What do you recommend?

Thank you.

Actually, I've been enjoying a long bath this morning with a book I didn't mean to buy but is turning out to be rather good. I didn't mean to put Julia Casterton's Writing Poetry A Practical Guide into my basket, I thought I'd selected a different book. A lot of what I've read so far isn't new to me in terms of what it says about rhythm etc. But the poems she uses to illustrate are good, she also includes some very interesting quotes from various poets and I enjoyed the early section about Sanscrit and poetry as I studied this for a while from a philosophical point of view.

I've only just dipped into Michael Symmons Roberts' The Half-Healed and Allison McVety's The Night Trotsky Came to Stay. So far, they are quite different but both very good.

My other purchase was Kathryn Simmonds' Sunday at the Skin Launderette. I haven't started this yet. But it is on the Guardian first book award long list and I really enjoyed the sample poems up on the Guardian website.

Congratulations, Sarah! You're a very busy lady - and a very clever poet and writer!
I'm glad your local paper appreciates it, too - and the picture was great!

Well done, Sarah. Your long and continuing list of successes are well deserved. Wish I had the discipline and determination to work as hard as you do.

Thank you. Funny thing is, I wish I was more disciplined, particularly when it comes to the art of writing more formal poetry. :-)

Yes, I've never felt so tempted to emigrate! There's too much I'd miss here though. Still, I may have to search out my sunshine lamp!

Just clocked your picture, Sarah - what do you mean 'Not a Page three girl!' It's better than any of those! Far, far better!
