On Trial!

It's been a week of trials for me, starting with contacts and then trying out my outfit for Friday's ball...with dubious results!

[More:]

I am trying out soft contact lenses at the moment and not getting on with them very well. I used to wear gas permeable lenses six years ago. I had them about seven years but finally got fed up with the faff: both discomfort wearing them and taking them in and out. I have an astigmatism so at that time I couldn't have soft lenses, which are supposed to be more comfortable. I was delighted then, when the optician said they now do monthly disposable soft lenses for people with astigmatisms. The pair I am trialling certainly seem more comfortable to wear than my old gas permeables. Unfortunately though, they don't correct the vision of people with an astigmatism (uneven eye shape) as well as glasses, or gas permeables. (I'm not sure of the science of it but basically soft lenses are bigger than gas permeables so move around more on the eye.)I'm having problems as the lenses seem to keep moving out of focus. I'm not sure if it's just me not doing something right, but I fear it may be because of the astigmatism.

Originally, I had been hoping to wear the soft lenses instead of glasses for my husband's work's summer ball on Friday night but I don't feel anywhere near comfortable/happy enough with my vision with them. I also don't feel very natural in my outfit generally. I don't really do dresses or skirts, let alone a proper evening gown. Still, I tried it all on today, minus the proper hairstyle and make-up.

Much better news for my planned week of non-writing but lots of reading is that The Butcher's Hands finally arrived earlier this week. I've had Catherine Smith's poetry collection on order from Amazon for nearly a year now, since reading her excellent collection Lip. I've only read the first two poems so far but it looks very promising, so here's to lots of poetry reading over the next two days...and not getting too drunk at my husband's do!

Sarah, you look fabulous! Never mind the glasses/lenses issue, you look a million dollars! This is also the first photo I've seen of the new half-size you, and seeing it really brings home the reality. Model material!

I don't do skirts and dresses either, but made an exception for my daughter's wedding with gratifying results. Stand tall, wear it with pride and I guarantee you'll wow them!

Sarah, like you I’m short-sighted (-7.50 in one eye and -6 in the other) with astigmatism and I have worn contact lenses for many years. I used to wear gas permeable lenses until a couple of years ago when I thought I’d better give my eyes a rest but I just couldn’t adapt to specs again. So I changed to soft lenses last year and find them very comfortable. I wear them all day long – I put them in first thing in the morning and take them out at bedtime. And my sight is so much better than with specs. Everything is in sharp focus once more.

I am so sorry you’re having such problems. Mine are the Acuvue Advance for Astimatism, made by Johnson & Johnson, fortnightly disposable. I don’t think mine move round my eyes at all – I know the gas permeable ones did, but these soft lenses are a much better fit. I can’t even feel them, like I did the hard lenses.

What abut trying another optician? I am sure you should find lenses to suit you and nowadays we have the freedom to shop around for dentists, opticians etc.

I really feel for you – believe me, I know all about being out of focus. Try explaining that to the gentlemen in the (mens) changing room at the swimming pool in the leisure centre in Kendal!

Have fun on Friday. What a lovely dress too.

Thank you Helen and Prue,
I shall definitely ask my optician about those Prue. Fortnightly's were never mentioned to me, only continuous wear, monthlys or dailys (which would be no good to me because I swim most days so need a pair I can take out and put back in again). Fingers crossed, or, as you say, I may try somewhere else.

Sarah you look absolutely stunning! Good luck with the lenses. I gave up years ago - my eyes always felt dry and itchy and the optician said it was because I was pregnant\breastfeeding\on the pill - and I was in one of those states constantly for fifteen years! Have thought of the op off and on to fix the myopia\astigmatism, but decided in the end tyo opt for pretty glasses¡

I have vaguely thought about ops, but I'd be too worried in case something went wrong. I think glasses are definitely a fashion item/style accessory these days. I also quite like them as my nose looks bigger without them. My problem with them though is that I'm totally dependent on other people's advice when choosing them as my eyesight is so bad I can't see myself when trying them on!
