Pain in the proverbial!

Apparently I am suffering from bursitis - otherwise accurately described as a pain in the arse!

[More:]

My trip to the osteopath yesterday confirmed there is nothing seriously wrong with me but I do have two minor injuries/conditions. One probably caused by the jogging (or possibly too high a resistance for too long a time on the exercise bike?) is bursitis (inflammation of some sacs that help protect the joints) in the hip/buttock region and weak core (back) muscles damaged six weeks ago when I was helping out at my son's school (bending over a desk to cut paper).

Anyway, the good news is that I've been told to keep mobile and carry on exercising (:-)) as long as I avoid jogging and cross-training for a while. She's also given me some special exercises to strengthen my core, says I should try to do more pilates and heat treat the back, while treating the hip/buttock with freezer packs. I also have to go back for another appointment on Saturday.

The bad news is that it isn't an instant cure (obviously, but I'm ever-optimistic!) and I am finding the pain/discomfort enough to stop me doing the full exercise I'd normally enjoy. (Only 60 laps of the pool today instead of my usual 100.) But it is way better than I'd feared, as I'd thought she might suggest I stop all exercise. It also means time I'd normally spend in the gym, I've been able to spend reading. I've just finished Sebastian Faulk's Engleby and am now part way through Adele Parks' Young Wives Tales, two very different both very readable novels.

Now I know what to call all those bursitises who knock on the door and try to sell me TV/telephone services I don't want.

Hope the pain eases soon, Sarah.

Glad to hear that it's not too serious. I think I had a touch of that on Tuesday when I cycled around Rutland water!

The joys of cycling! Once both our boys are off stabilisers and we can go for proper bike rides, I think I may try investing in a gel saddle.

Good news Sarah, and probably helpful to me, as I did the man thing and didn't go to the doctor, so I might have had something similar over the winter!

Tree House is a nice poem in your other post; great imagery.

Thanks Marc. Actually I'm in two minds about having seen the osteopath - as it now hurts more than it did before. (As a result, I haven't exercised at all for two whole days and feel like climbing the walls!) On the other hand, both my dad and two of my friends have all highly recommended osteopathy and all said the pain got worse before it got better. Fingers crossed for us both, anyway.

Bursitis was one of the knee things I had, Sarah, and ice packs were a great help...

For more 'pain in the butt', try acupuncture. That , too, gets worse before it gets better, but my brother was impressed by the results.
Seriously, I hope you feel better very soon!

Thanks Marit and Paola,
I have my second consultation today. I think she is going to try ultrasound/ultraheat/ukltrasomething! The cool packs definitely help temporarily, but I walkjed into town and back yesterday (only 30 mins walk but I was that desperate for exercise!) and it hurt, not a lot, but enough to make me wary of proper exrcise. My poor family, I shall be the rattiest person alive by the end of the weekend I reckon!
