Booked!

I have been booked this week, so has the whole family - not just in the conventional busy sense but also in terms of being surrounded by books.

[More:]

My elder son celebrated 'Book Week' by dressing up for school as Captain Hook and parents were also invited to accompany their children to a book fair in school. I was amazed, and pleased, by how much effort is put into the whole thing. The staff all had fantastic costumes on Friday and when I helped out with year two (six and seven year olds)on Thursday, they were writing book reviews.

On the book front, I have been enjoying two poetry collections this week: Corpus by Michael Symmons Roberts (review to follow soon) and Look We Have Coming to Dover! by Daljit Nagra. I also finished reading Pascal Petit's excellent Poetry School online course Towards a Collection, though I have plenty more practical exrecises to do as I try to sort out my own poems!

It has definitely been a week of reading and editing rather than writing, as I had the proofs back for one of my poems which is due (fingers crossed) to appear in Orbis and also had my latest Writers Bureau poetry assignment back. I have had lots of really valuable feedback and was pleased to realise I am finding it easier and easier to almost completely redraft poems, where neeeded, rather than sticking to earlier drafts and trying to change as little as possible. It feels like it has been a very productive week. Hope everyone else has had a good week too.

You've certainly been busy, Sarah - but it all sounds like good fun!
Two of my grandsons went dressed as pirates and the younger one came home reciting the stories they had heard, complete with the voices of the different characters - and excited about their new books from the Book Fair. It's a very good initiative - particularly where they involve the children in reviews , readings and acting out.

And keep up the good work! Sounds as though you're enjoying the editing as much as the writing! :-)

Thanks Marit. Yes, I'm starting to enjoy the editing a lot more. Of course, it helps when one has someone to push one in the right direction. I'm beginning to think my next step on the poetry front might be to try and find a mentor.
Glad your grandsons enjoyed book week too.

So pleased you've had a productive (and enjoyable) week. I think we forget sometimes that we are supposed to be enjoying our writing life. :)

Sounds like the Writers Bureau poetry course is going well, Sarah. I might do it one of these days. Glad you're enjoying it and btw I'm glad the swans are still okay and the pictures are great - very inspirational.
