Bargain buying!

Since starting belly dancing I have become a second hand clothes fiend. Not only can I find more variety in colours and styles than on the high street, but it also makes good financial and environmental sense. However, beware anyone who gets between me and my latest bargain!

[More:]

I have discovered that buying second hand clothes has many advantages. It saves me money, which in turn means I'm less likely to row with my hubby about the credit card bill! I'm giving money to charity instead of big commercial businesses and it's better for the environment to recycle and re-use, so I can tick off at least a few good deeds for the day on those points!

Obviously, I'm not always going to find something quite as up to date in fashion standards, but then that's not necessarily a disadvantage when looking for dancing clothes. The bigger disadvantage is not being able to find what one wants in the right size (though to be honest I frequently have the same problem when shopping new in the high street!).

Of course, once I've found a bargain, there's no stopping me. And today was no exception. I picked up a gorgeous black embroidered and sequined evening top (with a First Avenue Collection label, which sounds good, though I'm not sure!) for just £5.75. I wasn't going to let anyone else snatch it up before me but obviously I couldn't bring it back if it was the wrong size. I needed to make sure it fitted and wasn't going to let my toddler playing with the changing room curtain stop me. A few threats and bribery tactics later, I had tried it on without flashing the whole of the shop (just!) and was walking out with my bargain! Never let it be said that I'm not a typical woman - always happy shopping!

Hi Sarah, funnily enough this very topic was on the news this morning. How we should donate/buy recycled clothes.

Well done you!

Good idea Sarah, and as you say, good for charities and the environment.

I've found the world wildlife fund has a really good shop at their website, and they have a sale on at the moment: http://shop.wwf.org.uk/wwf_sale

They have some really nice gifts, and it's a good place to get environmentally friendly cleaning products. And you're helping a charity that cares for wildlife and the people/areas where they live in, as well as helping the environment. Gone into salesman mode I think; I'm not getting any commission, honest!

Well, we can all do our bit. As you say, Marc, some of the charity shops do have some lovely new gifts that are reasonably priced and often help the people who make them in third world countries earn a reasonable wage/make a reasonable living.

Excellent piece, Sarah. My kids swear by charity shops: you can have such a variety and it doesn't matter if you make the odd mistake: it's all for a good cause.

Great stuff Sarah! I've just taken up Morris dancing so I'll be scouring the charity shops shortly too! At the moment I'm looking for a top hat or a bowler hat, let me know if you find one!

Oh dear sarah, very funny. But I hate second hand clothes. Well I remember the musty smell of jumble sale clobber.
I must write a reply blog on this one.
My favourite aroma is the smell of
'new'.

But, Belly Dancing, I am impressed.
I shall start 'bingo wing' bopping!

If your little one is still quite small, try a pair of reins and hang him/her from the changing room hooks! No? Oh well, just a suggestion.

LOL. The reins idea sounds great, Sue!
Sue K, good luck with the top hat/bowler hat. Am I right in thinking those things can be pretty expensive even when second hand?
Lois, now I will agree there is nothing quite like the smell of new leather shoes/boots. But I think the second hand musty smell may be to do with the place you're buying from ie jumble sales or the type of clothes you're looking at maybe. I'm wary of things like heavy coats (I also don't do second hand hats/shoes) but washable clothes from decent charity shops are pretty good these days I think. Bingo wing bopping sounds fun ;-).

I'm all for re-using! Good for you! My daughter's filled my 'workshop' to the rafters with secondhand clothes, vintage clothing and more. She used to re-design, re-make and sell, but now it makes a good source whenever the girls are on the look-out for something different (she's busy with her 4 month old son and trying to get some writing in, inbetween, so not much time for sewing these days).
Have fun with the belly dancing!

Thank you, Marit. It sounds like your daughter had a fun business going. Hopefully, when your grandson's older she will have time to do that and her writing.
