Newborn
If only we could protect them for ever!
Newborn
for Thomas* (8 days) and Jack (24 days)
I hug his foot in my hand,
fingers closing like sepals
round a bud.
I hold his warmth, wish my grasp
big enough to protect his petals
in blossom.
* Thomas is one of my close friend's baby. He was born this side of the Atlantic around the same time as Jack, so he reminds me of the stage of development Jack is likely to be up to!

Yes, that's exactly what one does with a baby. It's a lovely feeling cupping their little hands and feet in one's hand as they're so soft, tiny and vulnerable.
Now you've gone and got me all gooey again, Sarah!

Lovely, Sarah. And their big little heads too.
Whenever I see a really young baby's head, especially if it's nicely rounded and with not much hair, I'm tempted to cup my hand over it. I don't, of course - not in this country with this political climate - I just smile sillily and nod.
Heads like that always make me think of playing snooker; I think that's the attraction ...

Thank you all.
Lez, can I just make sure I've understand you correctly. When you see a baby you want to get a big stick and poke the baby in the head? ;-)LOL

Beautifully written, Sarah.
The best way to express a poignant moment is in as few word as possible... I look forward to that moment with my newest grandaughter due any day now... words will never be enough, but you have summed it all. brilliant.

Wonderful, Sarah! Just as I felt yesterday, when cupping my grandson's head and planting butterfly kisses on his forehead. He grabbed my fingers and I just melted!

Such a lovely poem Sarah. Reminded me so much of when my grandchildren were tiny, not so long ago. Which of course reminded me of when my children were small too.
