Hopefully, we won't be flooded next!
We have spent most of the morning wondering if we will be next as roads flood, cars start to float and we hear tales of people nearby being evacuated. I wouldn't have believed it, if I hadn't seen it, as these pictures show.
We have a canal and river not far from the back of our house and when we went to investigate earlier today the river had burst its bank in places and was almost up to the height of the footbridge over it!

The canal is nearer to us than the River Salwarpe, but it overflows into the river and the overflow looked like it had just about reached its limit too! Just five minutes walk away, by the leisure centre, the road was flooded and a car in the middle of the water!

We also saw two Cheshire fire brigade trucks rush into town, sirens going and a dingy on a trailer. Apparently, Droitwich High Street is completely flooded.
Now this isn't the first time I've been caught up in floods. When I was a reporter for the Burton Mail, I remember driving back down the A38 from Burton to Lichfield. Normally, it's a fast dual carriageway. But that day it looked more like a river. I couldn't believe my car made it through it! The thing is, though, that flooding wasn't in the summer!
On a more positive note, it sounds like the river is going down not up in our area. The water has completely gone at my in-laws too, though it's going to take some time to get things sorted, as these pictures will show. My husband has gone over to help them now, and let's hope that's the worst of it over!

It's unbeliavable that the water can take over in such a short time and the strength and pull of the water can be so ferocious. But what can be done? It's not just the cost of all the damage, but also the cost of the work that needs doing to prevent it happening again. I just hope that the powers that be realise that 'a stich in time' is what is needed - and not promises of something being done some time in the future.
My in-laws are wonderfully optimistic people. They have lots of friends and are staying at their next door neighbours again tonight. At least they were still in the process of renovating, not finished!
I'm 63 and can't remember quite so much rain in such a short time here in the south east.
And if I can see that if you build on flood plains excess water is pushed downstream thereby flooding areas that haven't flooded in the past, I wonder why town planners can't.
Yes, did, it is crazy. Housing is a real problem in this country at the moment IMHO.
