I've been around.

I haven't been contributing much in the last few weeks, but I am still here and reading other peoples posts at night when I should be going to bed. It' because I've been trying to finish off my garden office (glorified shed) that I started building late last summer.

[More:]

Apart from pouring the concrete base, with the help of my brother-in-law, I've been entirely on my own and it's a big shed. I didn't buy a kit, I did it the hard way, I bought the timber and made it. Twelve foot by eight foot internally, insulated, vapour-barriered and pine cladding lined with electricity and double glazing, it's been a heck of a job! I had just done my drawings for it when, Andrew, my son, sent me a couple of American books on building your own shed for my birthday. Great. When I finished changing the drawings with the new ideas I had created a monster. I had to have a break over the winter, I was literally getting cabin fever! But, it's nearly there now. I've started to move the shelving out of the small bedroom, that has been my office up to now, and down the garden. However, the books and stuff that were on them are now everywhere, all three walls of the bedroom were bookcased and the landing had its own bookcase, as well, at the top of the stairs. The count runs into thousands when you add in the bookcases in the dining room, they won't be moving down the garden, tho', much to Helen's chagrin. I was genuinely starting to worry about the weight and was waiting for the day when office and I dropped through to the hall beneath! I originally started this post to show a couple of photo's that I have taken recently as we've been walking. We still do our morning dog walk, even tho' we have no dog, at the moment (more news to come on that front). And, while walking in the woods nearby we saw this fantastic creature.

A better one tho' is the next one when we were walking near Leyburn in Wensleydale over the holiday weekend. Blessed by the weather we had a lovely four days with our caravan in a favourite spot and amongst the treats were these two lovely little creatures.

So it hasn't all been slog. I have also been thinking about work. Actually, more than just thinking, I have been chasing some. The little grey cell is in need of some exercise and it would be handy to earn some money with it, as well.

  1. I like a bit of DIY myself, David, but building your own shed from scratch … Will we get pictures when it’s completed?

Excellent photos, too. Was that log natural or had it been carved?

  2. for a minute I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.
A good photo, and I'd like to see the photo's too of your shed when finished.

  3. That sounds quite an undertaking. I bought a greenhouse last year and am still waiting to get it up. It's at least a two person job. A friend and I erected the two ends last year but as soon as we started connecting them the wind got up and we had to retreat. One end in sitting room and one in dining room. Weather stayed bad so in the end both ends stacked behind house and all bits in barn.
Eventually other friends got together a work party and took all sections outside only to discover that I'd put the remaining nuts and bolts etc in a safe place and couldn't find them. Now have bough replacements and am waiting for a new work party.

  4. Love the photos, particularly the first one - although creatures like that aren't popular here at the moment. They keep eating people. Can't comment on the shed. Haven't done that sort of DIY since one particular production when I was a stage manager... But that's another story.

  5. Thanks all. No, David, that's exactly how it fell off the tree, plus a bit of age. I f you look closely you will see that the 'crocodile' actually has an eye in the right place, as well. The place is in chaos at the moment, as I'm just moving into the shed now, and the computer has been in kit form, meanwhile. I'll take a couple of photo's tomorrow. David.
