Any tecnically minded friends around?

Author: mater (add to friends)

My novel is finally completed (hurrah!), printed out and packed up, ready for tomorrow's post.

[More:]

Now I'd better make a back-up copy on disk, but what's this? My computer keeps telling me that it's a 'read only' file. How come? Why?

It's written in Word, so I copied and pasted over to a new document in Word Works, but the same thing happened there. Over into a new Word document - and still the same. Could it be the disk? Or the way I'm doing things (I usually use a pen drive, but haven't got one spare)?
I've used the disk before, but it's not that much on there - 10-12 short stories and vignettes, perhaps. I've just had a thought. It's a 700MB disk, perhaps it hasn't got enough MBs? No, I just checked; the novel is 998KB. Unless I'm totally befuddled, that leaves a lot of extra space.
Anyway - it's the 'read only' thing that throws me. I need to get it backed up. Perhaps I'd better order a couple of extra pen-drives tomorrow in the hope that will work. But if anyone can enlighten me, I'd be very grateful! :)

Hi,

Open the document and from the File menu choose Save As. Save your file with a different name. You should then have a copy with a new name, but identical text.

I would hope you have more than one back-up. I have mine on floppies as well as CD rom and flash disc. You never know when your computer will crash so you can't count on it always being safe in your hard drive.

I understand a lot of publisher also now want to eventually get the CDrom versions of MSS.

When I first got my computer it took me awhile to figure it out and I still don't understand a lot of the techie stuff. But for sure you need to make a couple of backups of your work on something other than your hard drive.

Thank you both! I'm going to save it to disk now (saving the file with a different name - thank you, Lo!) , get pen-drives tomorrow for further back-up, and send it up to the computer upstairs as well. I have an earlier version on pen-drive, but I have done a lot of re-writing and want the finished novel safe.
I'm onto it!
Thank you!

Marit, you should also upload it to your blog and mark it private. (only you will be able to see it). This means you will have a backup on the web.

Congrats on finishing the novel - good luck with it.
The inner workings of computers are a complete mystery to me but luckily my husband finds all the technical stuff fascinating so I asked him about this.
The read only option is a seurity device to prevent other people altering your document.
Open the document, click on FILE, then SAVE AS, then TOOLS, then GENERAL OPTIONS. Near the bottom of the box you'll find a check box for Read Only. Simply tick - or untick - this to turn the feature on or off.

I've learned quite a bit from your comments - including that there must be something not quite right with my laptop - so I'm calling my daughter, Stina, in to take a look. Read Only is not enabled (not ticked), so it shouldn't be a problem, but it is. But thank you, Linda - it's an option I wasn't aware of!

Uploading it to the blog, using the private option, is a brilliant idea, Sue. Thank you!
I foolishly selected all, thinking it would do the whole lot in one go - but it put the limit at about four chapters, so I'll be doing a few at a time.

Pleased to see that you have been given plenty of good advice, Linda stated what I was going to when I read your email. Good luck with the book.

Well done indeed Marit, & best of luck with your book. I've struck that 'read only' message befroe on my laptop & was similarly confused so I also found Linda's advice useful!
