Success, success, success and oh yes,

[More:]

success!

January 2009
Firstly, a special thank you to, (Rev) Linda Price; a poet and composer, who voted for my poem as the winner of the first poetry competition to be held in: The Pages magazine, hosted by Marit Meredith and her daughter, Kristina Meredith (Stina).

The poetry competition was based on a beautiful photograph of autumnal trees, which was enough to inspire me to write a poem, entitled: The Memorial Trees. As well as writing about a personal loss that affected our immediate family, and in particular my elder daughter, who shared the same autumnal birthday as her beloved Grandpa, I felt that the demise of the Second World War veterans should also be universally commemorated.

It was a great thrill to be announced the winner and receive a prize of £25, not just on behalf of my family, but for all Normandy veterans like Grandpa and their remaining families. To read the poem, here is the address: http://www.freewebs.com/theapprenticewriter/ Issue 4, page 9.

February 2009
The Sacrifice gained special mention and was short listed in the Pits and Crypts poetry contest on writelink.co.uk to commemorate Edgar Allan Poe’s 200th birthday. Thank you to the judge, Magdalena Ball, for her very helpful comments.

Another special thank you to Magdalena for her comments on my poem entitled: Snapshot Memory of Summer, which gained second place in the August 2008 Summer Heat writelink.co.uk Summertime poetry competition.

March 2009
A review on the poetry/short story anthology: Another HairCut? published in The Pages magazine, Issue 5, page 21, March/April 2009.

April 2009
The Spring Blessing - is commended in the annual writelink.co.uk Spring Fever poetry competition. A huge thank you to my family, colleagues and friends for voting and your helpful comments that were both posted and addressed personally. A special thank you to the judge, Glenise Lee for her comments that are gratefully acknowledged and appreciated.

April 2009
The Umbrella won first prize of £20 in the writelink.co.uk Resources Sunshine and Showers competition and is published for viewing here: http://www.writelink.co.uk/index.php.

Thank you Sue for your comments and feedback – always much appreciated. Two other poems I entered both made Sue’s shortlist. The amount of times my poems have been placed second, then third; then in the top 6 – all very exciting, but would you believe the last time, according to my records, I won the Resources poetry comp, was in September 2006 with: Transient Tainted Whispers!

May/June 2009
Published in Issue 6 of The Pages magazine are three of my poems. First poem is entitled: Clockwise and was runner-up in the Writelink Poetry Resources competition. Second poem is entitled: Mushroom Sauce. The third poem is entitled: The Soothsayer, Sage, Proclaimed. The poems can be read here: www.theapprenticewriter.webs.com

Another family winner is my grandson, who won the school Easter egg competition. See below. And congratulations to my younger daughter who has recently passed her driving test - first time round. Yoo Hoo!

Congratulations Marilyn, quite a tally! Sitting the "other side of the competition" as it were, proves to be a very interesting experience.

They say that success is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration! I would agree with this!

It's been amazing to see the progress that some of the Writelink members have made with their work just by continually entering the various contests.

Here's to many more!

Thank you Sue and yes I'd absloutely agree - 90% perspiration and to 'keep on entering!' And yes, I'm always amazed at the talented writers on Writelink - one can learn such a great deal.

No doubts about it, Maureen - a great thrill. Tenacious I will be!
