Greetings from the strange parallel world of NaNoWriMo.
Word count last night was 22,246 so I’m a bit behind target but still hopeful of reaching the magic 50,000 by the 30th.
Is it turning into a novel yet?
… and I got off to a good start, bashing out 1,735 words on November 1st and 1,495 on the 2nd. The daily target is 1,667 words but that is, like all Nano ‘rules’, an optional guide to help writers keep on track. Some people have already written far more – others far less.
So what is my novel about?
They say you never forget, but I have to admit I was a bit wobbly when I took my birthday present for a test drive.
Shall I? Shan’t I? Waste of time or valuable experience? Um … er … Yes! Why not? I’ve signed up for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) this year.
I’d been struggling with a story I wanted to enter in a competition. I had a brilliant beginning (of course) and a clear idea of the end, but I’d got bogged down in the middle. I knew what I wanted to say but wasn’t happy with my efforts to say it. I left it for a few days, tried again, left it for a week . . .
I glanced out of the window and saw a hare running across the field opposite our house. Luckily, my camera was within reach but I only managed to get one quick shot.
I typed a few sentences and noticed a comma where a comma shouldn’t be. I moved the cursor up to delete it. The comma wriggled down to the next line. Odd. I peered closer. The ‘comma’ was a minute insect. I tried to blow it away. I tried to sweep it off with a sheet of paper. It didn’t budge. I leaned even closer and saw that it wasn’t on the surface of the computer monitor but inside, underneath the glass.
We’re in the middle of the annual thunder fly invasion.
I was going to say it’s raining today . . .
But if Eskimos have 4, 50, or 100 words for snow* here in Britain we must have dozens of words for rain.
So I’ll start again . . .
