Sunday Stroll

Author: jak (add to friends)

Brassknocker Basin is about 5 miles south east of Bath on the Somerset Coal Canal, which joins the more well known Kennet and Avon Canal nearby.

[More:]

Last Sunday we arranged to meet my daughter there after her girlie weekend in Bristol, so she could retrieve her daughter from us and take her back up the M4 to London and their home.

It was raining when we arrived at the car park with an hour to spare, so we had our picnic lunch in the car, waiting until it had stopped. Once it was dry again we headed up the slope to the basin to wander canalside and see all the moored narrowboats.

(Note how someone had to get in on the act.)

Nearby is one of those fantastic feats of canal engineering, an aquaduct that carries the canal over the Limpley Stoke Valley, the railway that comes up from Salisbury, and the River Avon.

We spent a pleasant 45 minutes exploring and avoiding as much as possible of the mud, before we arrived at the basin’s café and some restorative hot drinks and ice cream in time for our meeting.

(In the preview of this I was disappointed as, unless I made the text too small to read, I could only see a small part of the pics I'd posted, so I'll post again in help about this, and hopefully it will get sorted.)

Pleased to hear there are others who enjoy a picnic in the car. These days you can have a picnic any time of year and there are fewer wasps to contend with in winter!

The pictures work fine for me so it looks as if you have sorted things. A little more activity on your canal than the one we walked. There everyone was moored up and the smoke was pouring from their chimneys.

There are not many people whose way of life I envy but from time to time your blog gives me twinges.

Oh, those picnics in the car that were a regular feature of summer holidays at Flamborough Head, while we waited in vainl for the rain to stop, or the seafret to lift. Nice pics Jean.

Those narrow boats look great too me. No waves or wind gusts to cope with. At least you were able to get photos on your blog I will keep trying it. The photos looks good by the way
