Lily Surprise

Author: jak (add to friends)

I bought these flowers at Tesco when they were still in tight bud. i didn't know what they were going to be like and had to wait a week for this result. Aren't they wonderful? And there are still more to come.

[More:]

You'll probably notice that I felt, sadly, that I had to cut out all the brown ends to the stamens. They make such a mess if you leave them. And they stain clothes and fingers badly too. I hold a tissue underneath them and gently snip them off. Then they go into the organic recycling box.

They are gorgeous. You're lucky they've lasted so long.

It's a coincidence I know but only yesterday I put the remains of the last lot we had into the compost bin.

My wife buys them regularly and they seem to last ten days before the petals fall off.

They're known as asiatic lilies here Jean, as distinct from the orientals, arum, or Christmas varieties. And in the trade it's de rigeur to remove the stamens to prevent being 'lilied'. :)However, if you do inadvertently get the stuff on your clothes, don't panic. Wash as normal & hang on the line; you'll find drying in the sun will miraculously take out the marks.

They're beautiful, Jean. I've also had them in a vase and never thought about cutting the stamens off - good idea. A friend of mine is allergic to the pollen. Apparently different varieties (and therefore colours) flower here at different times of the year.

Gorgeous, Jean. Yes, the pollen is hard on allergy-sufferers.
