I just adore chocolate brownies. I first came across them when I was working near Fleet Street, and the first Prête a Mangée opened its doors there. You could buy a brownie with your exotic sandwich for about 80p extra. They formed a staple part of my lunchtime diet for quite a few years, but nowadays, for reasons of health as well as economy, they are a rare treat.

Last week, to celebrate a few CC sales, I shopped at Waitrose. Our local shop has recently been completely reorganised so it takes longer to find what you want, and people often come away with extras they’ve noticed during their search, and which have taken their fancy. Some retail marketing psychology going on there, I think.

Anyway, while browsing the shelves, I noticed this packet of chocolate fudge brownie cake mix. I couldn’t resist putting it in my basket, and yesterday morning I made my own brownies. It was so easy – took me five minutes to stir in some water, oil and an egg, to the mix, and spread it in a greased baking tray. It was ready before the oven had heated up. Then they took just 25 minutes to cook.

George and I had one each, still slightly warm, after our lunchtime snack at home. And they were heavenly. I’m hooked again. We’ve just had more today. But you’ll be pleased to hear I am rationing myself to one a day.

Oh delicious! I just couldn't have brownies in the house, as I have no willpower!

I've got a great recipe for brownies if you want it. (Fancy using Writelink to swap recipes! What a scandal.) Fortunately for me, I can take or leave chocolate (mostly leave) and as for cooking...! Part of a different incarnation. Passed all my recipes on to my kids instead, and only resurrect them on request - mostly for their birthdays. Anything with fresh cream, though - that's a different matter!

I have fancied something yummy this evening - but have to make do with reading about it! No gluten free treats in my cupboard. Just as well - I'd only eat them.

Enjoy your brownies!

Thanks for comments, folks.

Helen, I have seen some recipes for brownies but I've always been too idle, or short of time, to start one from scratch.

We do have recipes on here - see Paola's blog. Why not post yours so everyone has the choice of making them.

Well I can't believe this post is up! I've decided to make brownies for a pudding on Monday as I've all the kids and their partners coming round. Would definitely be interested in Ozhm's receipe.
