I've got my tax rebate (caused by doing some temping at basic rate a year ago). Last time it took them nearly two and a half years, lots of phone calls and lots of patience. This time about two weeks. It must be a record.

Excellent news. Our letter from the taxman this year wasn't quite so nice!

This reminds me of a taxman story I experienced a few years back, when I received my tax refund cheque a few days before it would have been invalid due to not being presented in time.

For reasons that continue to baffle, the correctly addressed envelope containing cheque had languished in the 'dead letter' office at the PO for 6 months.

I never did receive a sensible explanation why!
