Shaftesbury in January

Author: jak (add to friends)

The rain held off this morning and we took the 4 mile drive to Shaftesbury for a wander in the fresh air.

[More:]

Even on the grim January day people had gathered to look down on the famous Gold Hill. The cafe at the top was open and some brave souls were sitting at the outside tables eating their light lunches, albeit well wrapped up in their coats, scarves and hats. I had to pick my moment to get my shot of this classic view empty of people. The wall to the right is the original boundary of the abbey grounds. There are houses and gardens behind it now. You can just see someone's rotary washing line peeping over the top.

Shaftesbury sits on a ridge with wonderful views to both north and south. The Park Walk footpath is just a step from Gold Hill, running alongside the Abbey ruins and museum. It's views are to the south and I took some pics to show how they look at this time of the year.

This one is the middle view.

Now looking slightly to the east, you can see some of the dwellings on the outskirts of the town.

And this is the view to the west, taken a bit further along the pathway.

I've just spent a happy half hour fiddling with the photos in my fantastic Adobe Photoshop Elements programme. It's amazing what you can do with the Image Enhance feature. Anyway, these pics are the result.

Lovely pics, Jean! Beautiful traditional English market town & countryside. Have never been to Shaftesbury but it looks well worth a visit.

Shaftesbury is very picturesque and has one of the few remaining cattle markets in North Dorset. It has lots of history. The Abbey was the second burial place of King Edward the Martyr (10th century) who was later sainted so that it became a place of pilgrimage. For the northern views you cross over the road to the ancient castle earthworks. And of course its latest claim to fame is being the location for the Hovis ad.
