25th Anniversary of Scientists Finding Aids Virus
On 23 April 1984 scientists made a breakthrough in the battle against AIDS. The discovery of a virus believed to cause Aids was hailed as a "monumental breakthrough" in medical research.

A symbolic date for world literature for on this date and in the same year, 1616, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. It is also the date of birth or death of other prominent authors such as Maurice Druon, Haldor K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Meja Vallejo.
25th Anniversary of Libyan Embassy Shooting
17 April 2009 marks the 25th anniversary of the death of a police officer after shots were fired from the Libyan People's Bureau in central London. WPC Yvonne Fletcher had been helping control a small demonstration outside the embassy when automatic gunfire came from outside.
