Henry Tate, the English merchant and art patron who founded the Tate Gallery was born on this date in 1819.

Tate was a sugar merchant who patented machinery for making sugar cubes. His firm later became Tate & Lyle.

Born in Chorley, Lancashire, he was instrumental in establishing the Tate Gallery in London in 1897. The Tate houses British art from the late 16th century and international art from 1810 while the Tate Modern, opened in May 2000, exhibits a collection of international 20th and 21st century art.

Henry Tate was created baronet in 1898.
