Salvador Dali Dies

23 January 1989

Salvador Dali is considered to be the greatest artist of the surrealist art movement.

[More:]

Dali was born in the small town of Figuera in Northern Spain where his artistic talent was evident from an early age. He studied art at the Royal Academy of Art in Madrid but was expelled twice and never sat the exams – his belief was that he was more qualified than those who should have examined him. Dali lived the end of his life in the tower of his own museum where he died on 23 January 1989 from heart failure.

Hello Dan
The post is part of the Events Diary. Dali was such an interesting man, I thought the 20th anniversary of his death would be a good hook for someone to write an article about him / his paintings / surrealism.

Yep, I think its fair to say that Salvador Dali was also a controversial character with a complex and difficult personality. On Dalí’s personality, George Orwell once remarked that ‘one ought to be able to hold in one’s head simultaneously the two facts, that Dalí is a good draughtsman and a disgusting human being, the one does not invalidate or, in a sense, affect the other.’ Lol! The guy had his flaws, thats for sure. After the War Dalí returned to Spain and became close friends with the dictator Franco. Dalí publicly said he admired Franco for clearing Spain of 'destructive forces' and he praised the signing of death warrants for political prisoners. Its also a fact that Dali holidayed with the Dictator and his family and painted a portrait of the fascist dictator's granddaughter.
