A different success story
Some of you may remember my 'How the other half live' piece, about the project where I help out. The link (if this works) is http://www.writelink.co.uk/blogs/Chausiku?p=1321&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1#more1321
The piece has been accepted for publication by 'The Oldie' in their expat column. And you may remember a story (no link - I've censored it!) in which Pru is hoping to wheedle some funds from someone for one of her good causes...Anyway
the project (La Pascua) was desperately needing funds to build a new classroom - they have a system called 'aulas comunitarias' in which kids who have missed out on secondary school can go there and do first year secondary then get back into the mainstream system ... and the buildings they have are run down and overcrowded. And (as in the Pru story) i heard about some funds that were available, we put in a proposal, and hey presto, it worked! Well, not real presto, it took about ten weeks for the approval to come through as everyone was on summer hols - but the papers should be signed next week! I think it's worth about £3,500, which goes a very long way here. The parents will all help out with the building, and the kids too.
And that's not all - I managed to get them a computer from an office that was renewing its equipment... last time I visited music from it filled the soggy air...
Tomorrow I go there with Alicia (who came to do my northern cooking course - see a few posts back)to give a 'Healthy and Economic Cooking' course - this morning we went to the wholesale market to buy fruit and veg, and filled the back of the car for about $5.00!

That is great news about the school - so glad your hard work paid off - you certainly do deserve it.
