Not What It Says On The Tin

There is a revolt in my garden.

[More:]

The RSPB wildlife survey asked you to record what crawls, hops, flutters and flies in your garden. I did that last week then found that the recording format did not include a lot of things.

The frog (or toad) was quite smug as he/she was in.

But the rabbit decided it would pretend it wasn't there because it wasn't counted.

The squirrel decided to decamp next door as it wasn't included either.

With the rain and the cold the spider decided it was warmer inside the shed and refused to be counted.

The bumblebees on the foxgloves just buzzed off, followed by the bees on the cotoneaster. A speckled wood, large and small white butterflies decide not to land. The woodlice just rolled themselves into balls and the worms that escaped from the blackbirds just buried themselves in the soil.

So the birds ruled the garden with green finches top of the list.

But the final insult to them all was that the ginger tom from across the road figured in the final count.

[I'd love to put this piece on the new site but you can't load multiple photos there yet]

The important thing is that YOU know they are there, Bob. Have to say there seem to be some odd exclusions though.

I suspect moggies were included as they are a potential threat to wildlife. Certainly the four that live next door are not welcome in our garden. On the other side there are two very superior pedigree cats who never stray outside their territory.

Great photos.

Looks like you've got a very busy garden there, Bob.
I did my count on Saturday and the maximum numbers were:
starlings - 12, house sparrows - 2, blackbirds - 3, collared dove - 1.
But you should have seen what flew overhead and visited next door's garden!

Great pictures, Bob. Even the (arachnophobic shudder) spider. Was the rabbit just shy?

Bold as brass, David. But this was the only time I had my camera at the ready.
