Painted Ladies

In the evening sun we had a visitor on our pieris bush.

[More:]

It spent some time on the bush and I was able to get several photos of it.

After it had gone I checked the place where it had settled. By measuring across the leaves I worked out its wingspan to be just under 2.1/2".

I believe this is a painted lady. If so this is the first I have ever seen.

Cracking pictures, Bob, but how do you do it? By the time I've got the camera out, they've flown off.

You are right about this being a Painted Lady butterfly, Bob. They are summer visitors to our shores I believeand I haven't seen one yet here in Oxfordshire although we often have quite a few during the summer. Like all butterflies they are in decline and last year we didn't see any so hopefully your sighting is good news. Lovely photos, too.

We have those in Nottinghamshire Bob, I remember seeing one at a redeveloped local pit site now turned over to woodland and nature. Beautiful things.
Edit
I just mentioned this fact to the dragon and she informed me that we get both Painted Ladies and Red Admirals in our garden all summer long and that I needn't have gone to an old coal mine to see one.
Shows what I know

We've been hearing on the local news about an influx of thousands of Painted Ladies in the west country this year, which have migrated from Africa, as they do. Slimbridge is a good place to find them now apparently.

Terrific pics, Bob.
