Charges for use of images
I have recently asked the National Portrait Gallery for permission to use an image of portrait of a subject I needed for an article. I won't bore you with all the detail but the gist of the reply puts me off..
£23 for a jpeg file for reproduction in printed publications
A reproduction fee for its use in a printed article; cost dependent on the print run of the publication and the page size to be used.
For online use in my blog a reproduction fee of £20.70.
Has anyone else similar experience of charges for use of images, not just with the NPG?

But don't buy the image yourself. Let the editor know where to find it as it's up to him to pay these costs.
Incidentally, if your own images are used in publications, (not newspapers) you can make a claim for royalties through DACS.
Worth doing if you have even a moderate amount of articles published, illustrated by photos or other graphic which you own.
I'll have to make a decision about how I want to proceed. I wanted an image of a engraving for an article intended for a local history event at Yarm library - the librarian may get this, and others produced by Yarm Writers, published. I can't see them wanting to shell out for the image though especially as I can't give them info about the reproduction costs from the NPG.
Hope you can get your pic. It's possible the NPG would waive their fees for a pubic library. Worth a try anyway.
I often use free photo sites for pics for my blogs, and have a number of them bookmarked. Good if they have what you want.
