Butterflies
There have been very few butterflies in our garden to admire this year . Hardly any tortoiseshells, cabbage whites were the most common, a peacock or two on the buddleia and then last week this appeared.
It did not help me by landing on the roof of our bungalow. Taking pictures of it while I stood on a garden chair was quite precarious.
I have never seen one like this before? Is anyone a budding lepidopterist who can identify it for me?

I'm pretty sure your butterfly is a 'Speckled Wood',
probably a female. I photographed one myself the other day and had to look it up as I didn't know what it was.
Regards, diane.
Diane has sent me a PM as well. I had come to the same conclusion about it being a Speckled Wood. I was unable to get a good photo of it with its wings open. Thanks again Diane.
Marilyn, I was convinced it was a butterfly and so was my wife who first brought it to my attention when it had settled on the washing she had just hung out.
