Sam's Refuge

Sam really wants to be the alpha dog.

[More:]

But as yet there are times when he cannot quite make it.

Sam, a 10 year-old Yellow Labrador, had to yield this position to Jack, a rescued, brown Labrador who came to join Sam, his sister and black Lab Mutt Gem at home near Oxford, Michigan.

Because of Jack’s harsh upbringing, his sometimes fierce approach proved too much for the gentler rule of Sam.

However as Jack grows older and a problem with his hips gets more troublesome, Sam is getting bolder and competes in situations where previously he would have avoided conflict. This can be seen by occasional bloody noses and ragged ears on them both.
When Sam wants a rest from competition he quickly takes refuge underneath the bed – where Jack can no longer crawl to attack him.

[Postscript: Since this was written in 2007, Sam has got his wish. Unfortunately Jack has recently had to be put to sleep. And now poor Sam is going blind. We are hoping his sister will act as his eyes.]

My dogs were my best friends, especially Benson who was very much top dog. It's so sad when they get too old to care for themselves properly. Lovely pic.

Oh I love labs. Years ago, in Belgium, my black lab Soca had nine pups, three black lige her and six blond like their dad, whose name was Foreign Exchange. (We called him *anker.) Two of the pups went on to be guide dogs.

There's got to be a top dog where there's two - and you must have had some amusing moments with them.
It's very sad when they are at the end of their lives.
I hope that Sam's sister will prove to be a help to him.

Our last dog was called Sam (short for Samson of Warwick - we lived at Warwick House). He was a staffie who got cancer and was 8 years old when we lost him. It broke our hearts and we haven't had a dog since, though I do help out by taking their dogs when friends take a holiday.

Sam is short for Samuel Winston Scotney. As my daughter's dog she wanted him to have an English connection. He doesn't write, paint or smoke cigars!

Molly is the head honcho of my two, though maisie has never come out of puppyhood, so she isn't too fussed about who is boss. They never fight seriously, though they do get very boisterous in play fights, Woe betide anyone or any inaminate object that gets in the way.

It's so sad when a dog dies. It's such shame they don't get a few more years. 10-15 is nowhere near long enough.
