The late autumn sunshine spangled the frosted grass of the little churchyard on the morning they buried old Charlie Cotter. “Amen” said the fresh faced young curate, closing his prayer book.
“Amen” replied the little group of mourners assembled at the graveside, then each tossed a little of the rich, red Bretherton soil into the grave.
Margaret Richardson, swaggering to the very edge, then discreetly wiping a tear. “God bless you, you daft old bugger!”
