ALMOST THERE WITH THE NEW ARENA

The new Arena is almost finished and now requires a thorough testing! We need plenty of postings, comments and ratings.

[More:]

This is what is supposed to happen:

1. When a new item is posted to the Arena, other members have the choice of rating it either Getting There, Nearly There or Publishable.

2. They can only rate once.

3. Which ever option they select a message should appear in an orange box thanking the rater. The vote should be recorded in real time in the small boxes beneath each rating button.

4. When content gets 3 Publishable votes it will appear in the Publishable Articles box in the left hand column. (Latest will head the list).

5. This box is designed to show the latest 10. There will be a link to show all Publishable articles when the list exceeds 10.

6. You can comment and not rate should you wish.

If you have previously added content to the Arena you will probably find that the original ratings have gone. Our programmer had to reset the database to make everything work properly.

It would be best to either submit new content or delete what you have all ready posted and resubmit it. :D

Sue, how do we delete posts on the new arena? I was able to delete the comments for 'Blazing the Trail', but there didn't seem to be a 'delete' tab for the piece itself...

Can you try it now? The settings were set to prevent deletion. Can you let me know if you were able to delete anyone else's posts as well as your own?

Does anyone out there have any experience of self-publishing? I have self-published the first two of a trilogy, Print on Demand. It was quick and reasonably priced. The real problem is marketing with every obstacle put in the way by bookshops, for example. I wondered whether it might be worth starting a forum on the subject. Or should I be posting this somemwhere else?

POD publishing is now well within everyones reach now. I've use www.lulu.com and been pleased with the results.

Marketing is always the hardest part though. I could set up a blog for self publishing, but someone would need to run it otherwise it will get buried amongst all the others.

If anyone would like to run this, email me sue@writelink.co.uk

Otherwise, you could get a thread going on the site Forums.

Positives and negatives in my experience. I'll do a blog on it. I'm new here so how you find it - I can't help yet.

I've self published twice. Both times so far with Authorhouse. My main criticism is all the hidden extras and the fact that you need to edit your work very, very carefully before you submit it, otherwise putting trivial mistakes right costs a bomb!

The marketing aspect is also hard. Especially when I'm working full time.

I do think this is where we self published writers can help each other by promoting our work. Writelink seems to me to be an ideal place for this.

Also any ideas about how we can break into mainstream? There are some good writers out there, but no one in the established arts world seems to want to know.

Misha.
