EXCITEMENT IN ASTERBRIDGE

Well I think I’m getting the hang of this technology thingummy. Our Darrel says it will open up a whole new world of excitement and adventure once I get the hang of it. Hmm, I don’t know about that. Asterbridge might be a sleepy Midlands backwater, but I can tell you it has it moments … take yesterday for instance.

Darrel was right in the middle of explaining about this web thing and something called blogs which I think I’m writing now though I’m not really sure as I thought a blog was something you found on a moor, but Darrel said that was a bog and I ought to get my aid adjusted. Anyway, while I was getting my head around this blog thing, we suddenly heard the wail of a siren, the next thing the whole village was teeming with bobbies rushing up and down the street and dashing into people’s gardens and houses.

I was quite alarmed, I can tell you and was really glad Darrel had bunked off school, though I had planned to have a quite word with his mother about it as I’m a great believer in education myself and to be honest, Darrel needs all the education he can get.

Oh dear, here I go again, digressing, where was I? Oh yes, the boys in blue swarming all over the village … Oh drat … there goes the phone … I’ll write more tomorrow. Hmm … that’s funny … it only rang once … Oh it isn’t the phone, I remember now, Darrel said that pinging noise is my email box … now I wonder who could be sending me a message?

If you're old enough to remember Mrs Dale's diary then you will know what this is all about! If you're not - think Archers and any of the other radio or TV soaps you might subscribe to! Invent new characters, develop existing ones, put them into impossible situations and leave someone else to clear up the mess, but most of all, have fun!

I've written a post to the help pages. It is headed, Testing private posts. I can see it both in help and in blog all. Can anyone else see it?

Sorry Sarah, that was my fault. What you need to do when editing it, is click on your own blog tag at the top of the edit screen. Where it says "new post in blog" in red. then save it to whatever category you want.

... Except of course that you don't get those boxes when editing in linkblog, and yet, I did it earlier today.

I'll get back when i've fathomed it.

You'll find your categories on the third tab of the edit screen(Backoffice). As far as I'm aware you cannot rename a category. You have to delete it and then create it again with a new name. Don't worry about any files you may have in it. When you delete the category, the work is automatically transferred to the parent category.

Marlyn, I've just sent you an email covering some of the points you raised in your last post.

For anyone else looking in, if you want to email an author, you usually find an envelope on the bottom line of the post which opens an email window.

I've recently recieved a comment on a submission and found that I could actually edit it. I'm wondering about this with respect to the possible consequences and why would (is it ethical?) a recipient of the comment want to edit someone elses comments if you see what I mean?

Admittedly, you might not like a particular comment and therefore you have the option of deleting it. But supposing a member liked part of the comment, yet found parts of it not to their liking, they could then alter the senders comment to suit their intent and purpose.

I've just checked this out and you're right. I was able to edit any comment from anyone on my posts. I can see a lot of gerrymandering with comments if we're not careful.

Marilyn and the anonymous visitor, it's David again. I inserted the teaser break in the post below for two reasons. 1) it was taking up too much room on my screen and I have enough problems with the wife taking up too much room in various locations and 2) I was checking to see whether I really could edit posts in the help section.

Re Spam karma, I'm guessing that it's a spam rating of some kind. AOL have a brilliant spam filter, but it sometimes gets it wrong and puts kosher emails into the spam box. I figure this karma is something similar; a kind of flag to warn you that a comment may be spam. the higher the karma, the greater the likelihood, and you can take appropriate action.

Kay, I checked on the email thing. I've been a member of blogger for a long time, and over there because your username is your email address, you're up the creek without the proverbial. I haven't checked to see whether we can disavble email addresses here, but if not, I'd advise using a hotmail account or similar.

Whe you save something as draft, Marilyn, it's not published at all. Draft copies are for unfinished pieces. When you deprecate an item, as far I can gather, you withdraw it from publication, but not necessarily from your files.

The only way I can figure to get the word count is to preview the page before you save it. The preview opens as a fresh window.

Members keep posting to Linkblog, which as the category implies is for links. Now it's fine while we're in the testing stage, but when the blogs go live and we have thousands of them here, the linkblog is going to be pointless.

Sue, Rob, I don't know how others feel, but it might be better if bloggers have the facility to set up their own links alongside or near to their profile. How do other testers feel about this?

That's the only way to deal with it, but don't forget to delete the copy in Linkblog.

I said further down that this is going to be a problem when the blogs go live, because it is too easy to post in the wrong blog, the reason being that when you go to your backoffice pages, they default to whatever blog you were reading, be it linkblog or help, rather than defaulting to your own blogs.

I have visions of thousands of WL bloggers looking for posts that are in Help and link.

Hello,

I need a bit of help? When I log into my blog I cannot see the last post I made to it "Poetry Day at Chesterfield Library". I've tried refreshing the page, logging in and out etc and nothing will bring it onto the Blog page?

I can access it if I go to Linkblog and look for it, Marilyn has commented as I've received email notification and I've published her comment but nothing will appear on my Blog.

Any help appreciated?

You can't see the post because you posted it to Linkblog instead of one of your own categories.

It was that, plus one or two other extraneous posts there that prompted me to comment on the inadvisability of linkblog.

I have never come across a blog that can be accessed back to front. The reason being that blogs are now! and meant to be read now, not in a year's time. They are news. And quite frankly a reverse blog would be useless to me because it's rare that two posts are linked, other than in my "log" category.

I have tried every way from Sunday, but the posts still appear in the order they were posted, as they do on every blog.

I wouldn't see the blog as an extension to Arena but a replacement (for those who want it). I treat blogs as I would a magazine. If you put a series of articles in a magazine, the buyer may buy the latest edition and have to backtrack to earlier issues for the previous articles.

Dids, it's David. With a little detective work, I tracked you down as Alter Ego.

The reason you can;t find your posts to edit is because they're all posted in Linkblog instead of alter ego's blog. You need to move them.

I understand about a blog being more immediate, so bow to the fact that a reverse posting system isn't what blogs have, but if we're to be using it as an extension of arena, and the star system indicates we can, if someone was doing a series of poetry with a central theme, or even book chapters, some sort of facility for moving work around would be useful.
